Hohchban Reunion
Year 2002
In 1910 and 1924, two families of Hochbans immigrated to Canada from Zickydorf, Austria-Hungary. Other Hochban relatives remained behind in Zickydorf and underwent all the tribulations associated with two world wars. At the the end of WW2, the communists of Serb dominated Yugoslavia practiced ethnic cleansing and sent most Germans to work in camps, confiscating land & homes. The males over puberty were mainly killed and never heard of again. The story of the camp relocation has been written by many but for our family, Barbara Hochban-Unger has given us her memory of these times.

For the past 78 years these two separate groups of Hochbans have had no contact and in some cases didn't know the existence of the other families. Finally after two years of research, the Hochban families made contact and in year 2002 my family of Hochbans flew to Germany to visit and embrace our new found relatives.

1) May 2002: Daughter Karin (From Ottawa, Ont. Can)

Karin with husband Frank and baby Joseph toured the Black forest region and then made the first contact with our German relatives near Stuttgart, Baden-Wurttemberg. A photo illustrates their visit.

The cousins met from the tree of 1910-Andreas Hochban are:

Push For Larger - Back To Return

The expressions of warm and affection demonstrated by all families were wonderful and have left us all complete with fulfillment and happiness. The only sad moment was in departure which left most of us with tears knowing that we now have recovered something that was lost for so many years. My sadness is in the knowledge that my father 1910-John Hochban never got the opportunity to see his German relatives again. Further plans for Canadian - Germany interchange visits have been made resulting in family reunions in 2003 and 2004.
